Hau te Kura - Dual Medium Professional Learning & Development
As the 2026 school year commenced, Huia Kaimanawa launched a new PLD opportunity for many of our members and tangata tiriti affiliates who lead dual medium (Level 1 and 2) settings. This kaupapa supports the implementation of Te Marautanga o Aotearoa (TMoA) and the New Zealand Curriculum (NZC), and we are looking forward to sharing the successes we know will emerge from this mahi.

He kupu whakataki | Introduction
Pinepine te kura, hau te kura, whanake te kura ….
Our kaupapa is derived from the well known oriori ‘Pinepine te kura’.
Hau – wind, breath, vital essence, life force
Te kura – treasure, knowledge, learning, sacred teaching, sometimes the red plume (symbol of chiefly status)
Hau te kura - The living breath of sacred knowledge
Hau te Kura has been designed with school leaders in mind. We recognise the complexity of leading rūmaki and bilingual provision within English-medium schools, and the responsibility that sits with kura leadership to support kaiako, learners, and whānau.
Hau te kura speaks to the breath and vitality of treasured knowledge. This programme supports leaders to strengthen Māori-medium and bilingual pathways through confident, informed leadership grounded in Te Marautanga o Aotearoa and The New Zealand Curriculum.
Why Hau te Kura?
Hau te Kura is focused on supporting you, as a school leader, to:
Strengthen leadership of rūmaki and bilingual units (Levels 1 and 2)
Build confidence in leading dual-curriculum implementation
Support kaiako to plan and deliver effective, sustainable teaching and learning programmes
Access practical tools, resources, and guidance that reflect the realities of school contexts
Grow leadership capability in ways that are culturally grounded and strengths-based
If you teach or lead in a dual medium L1/2 or 3 setting and are in need of support or wish to strengthen your leadership and undertsanding. This workshop is for you
